Acidity - Symptoms, Treatment And Causes |

 What is Acidity

Acidity is a medical condition that occurs due to overproduction of acid.  This acid is produced by the glands of the stomach.  Acidity causes symptoms like stomach ulcers, gastric inflammation, heartburn and indigestion.

It is usually caused due to many factors like irregular eating pattern, lack of physical sports or activities, alcohol consumption, smoking, stress, fad diet and poor eating habits. Where people consume more non-vegetarian, spicy and oily food.  Where people are more prone to acidity.

Too many drugs like NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) can also make a person more vulnerable to developing gastric acidity.  A deep burning sensation after a heavy meal is the hallmark of acidity.  Indigestion and constipation are also common in people with acidity.

It can be cured with home remedies or by taking antacids and applying it in a healthy way.  A technique called endosperm provides extreme relief from acid reflux.  Common symptoms of acidity include indigestion, nausea, sour taste in the mouth, constipation, restlessness and a burning sensation in the stomach and throat.

What happens to your body due to acidity?

Acidity or acidosis leads to an imbalance of pH in the body, this usually occurs when the kidneys and lungs are unable to remove excess acid from the body.  Thus it leads to acidity.

What is the cause of acidity?

Our stomach usually produces gastric acid which helps in digestion.  The corrosive effects of these acids are balanced by the production of prostaglandins and natural bicarbonates that are secreted into the mucous lining.  This damages the lining of the stomach and causes acidity.

Other factors that cause acidity include:

 Consuming non-vegetarian and spicy food.

 excessive stress.

 Consuming too much alcohol.

 frequent smoking

Stomach disorders such as stomach tumors, gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcers.

Medicines such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

 How does acidity happen?

Acidity occurs when the gastric glands in the stomach produce too much acid and the kidneys are unable to get rid of it.  It usually comes with heartburn, reflux, indigestion.  Usually the cause of acidity is due to eating more spicy food, coffee, more food, less fiber food.

Who is at risk of acidity?

People who are prone to acidity are:

 heavy eaters

 obese

 snackers close to bedtime

 heavy coffee drinkers

Can acidity go away on its own?

Acidity, commonly known as acid reflux, is a condition in which gastric acid flows back up into the esophagus.  If it happens occasionally then it is quite normal to have acidity, but if it happens repeatedly then it is a matter of serious concern.  Acidity can be a chronic condition and in that case it does not go away on its own.  It becomes necessary to consult a doctor for initial treatment, otherwise it can lead to complications like ulcers, strictures and swelling in the esophagus.

What causes too much acid in your body?

There are two types of acidity:

Respiratory acidosis occurs when there is excess CO2 in the body. It is caused by chronic airway conditions such as asthma, chest injury, obesity, sedatives, alcohol overuse, muscle weakness, distorted chest structure.

Metabolic acidosis occurs when the kidneys are unable to remove excess acid from the body and there is too much lactic acid in the body.

What is the difference between acidity and gas?

The difference between acidity and gas is:

Acidity is a condition in which the body produces more acid than is required for digestion.  Acidity usually accompanies heartburn.

Whereas gas is formed in the colon and it aids in digestion.  An average person expels gas from either the rectum or the mouth about 20 times a day.  However, when excess gas is produced or trapped due to eating large meals or spicy foods, it is released through a burp.  It can range from mild to extreme and can sometimes cause abdominal pain if it is stuck or when the digestive system is not running smoothly.
