What are calories?

According to the definition of physics, the temperature of one gram ofwater is one degree Celsius. The energyused to increase this is called calorie. The accumulation and consumption of energy in our body is measured in caloriesonly.

However, the caloric changes inthe body are so large that the simple calorie measure is small, so one unit ofone thousand calories - kilocalories is used. These kilocalories are written in English as k.calorie or capital ‘C’.

We often hear some calorie conscious peoplesay, "No, I don't eat ice cream, it contains a lot of calories, or I'vestopped eating fried foods to reduce calories." So how do you determine if certain foods arehigh in calories and low in calories? Our body derives energy from the components of food and we measure this energyin units of calories.

Studies so farhave shown that there are three main components that can provide energy to aperson - protein, fat and sugar, every one gram of protein or one gram of sugaris completely burned. While one gram offat burns about nine kilocalories, that is, the total energy from fat is twiceas much as the energy from sugars orproteins. That is why fatty foods likeghee, oil, fried foods, butter, cream, ice cream etc. are considered to be highin calories.

In this way, chemical analysis of each food item can be doneto find out the amount of fortifying fat, protein or sugar in it. Based on such analysis, a table of how manykilocalories of energy is obtained from each food is also prepared.

Using such a able, food can be selected basedon the amount of calories in a daily dish. With the help of thecoke given on the last page, a person can plan for himself a proper diet by knowing the calories, fats, fiber etc. obtained from grains - beans, vegetables etc. How to calculate the calories in differentdishes?

In order to calculate the caloriesin different dishes of food, first ofall one has to know the method of making the dish, i.e. to make a plate dish one has to estimate how many grams and what ingredients are used. Then the calories of each of these items have to be calculated using a table and then the calories in each food item can be added to find out how many calories are in a platedish.
